CBD for dogs: everything you need to know

An increasingly popular trend, CBD has now infiltrated the pet market, with a wide range of specially designed products available! Renowned for its therapeutic properties, CBD has been praised by many pet owners who use this drug as a natural solution to improve their pet’s quality of life.

What is CBD?

CBD is a chemical compound that is naturally present in cannabis. It is made from hemp plants high in cannabidiol. It should not be confused with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), another of the plant’s active substances that is prohibited and classified as a narcotic drug in certain states. In fact, unlike THC, CBD has no psychoactive or addictive effects. Its consumption causes no side effects and it is not harmful to health. However, while a maximum of 0.2% THC is authorized in CBD-based formulations for humans, THC is totally prohibited in products made for animals.

What effects does CBD have on dogs? What is its purpose?

The effects of CBD are almost identical to those observed in humans since just like us, animals have an endocannabinoid system that regulates blood circulation, heart rate, breathing, and appetite. Using cannabidiol has many benefits, including: - Improving appetite and digestion - Reducing anxiety and stress - Reducing inflammation - Strengthening the immune system - Relieving pain linked to cancer - Alleviating joint pain - Managing certain neurological illnesses (epilepsy) - A clinical study on chronic pain linked to arthritis undertaken in 2018 by researchers at the faculty of veterinary medicine at Cornell University (New York State), demonstrated the effectiveness of the analgesic properties of CBD oil in 22 dogs suffering from arthritis, some of which were given a CBD oil treatment and others a placebo. The dogs that were given CBD oil showed a decrease in pain and an increase in physical activity without side effects. The researchers concluded that the CBD oil treatment improved mobility and joint comfort in animals.

What types of products should you use?

Cannabidiol comes in several forms. CBD oil sprays and drops are the most popular, probably because they are easy to administer and act quickly when consumed orally. Choose a 100% natural, high-quality oil. This will generally cost around 20 to 30 euros for 10 ml. As for the dosage, this depends primarily on your dog’s weight and the intensity of the pain. To help you get started, CBD brands for pets offer a variety of CBD products at recommended doses. As a precaution, always start with the lowest dose and follow the instructions on the label. CBD oil can be administered either directly in your dog’s mouth or in food. However, it is an acquired taste. For reluctant dogs, other cannabidiol products specially designed for dogs are available, including treats, lozenges, gelcaps, and snacks.

Where can you buy CBD products?

CBD products are sold in many stores, as well as specialist online retailers. Remember to always check the THC content. Compliant products are always sold with a certificate of laboratory analysis.

Does CBD oil pose any risks to my dog’s health?

We recommend only using THC-free CBD products specially designed for pets. If you believe your pet has ingested THC and/or you observe the following symptoms: numbness, excessive salivation, vomiting, trembling, convulsions, etc., please consult your vet immediately. Using products containing CBD, even products specially designed for dogs, should not be taken lightly. We recommend consulting your vet first, who can provide further information about using this drug.
